15 Minute Jet Ski Pre Purchase Inspection
Don't be rushed.
Greet the seller and have a conversation.
Let them do most of the talking.
Use your intuition to gauge the seller (do they have a well kept home or workplace? seem calm? present themselves well? point out known issues?)
Ask to see any maintenance paperwork.
Visually inspect exterior for damage from all angles - scrapes, dents, paint issues, previous repairs, tears or stains in fabric, peeling of pads. If the jet ski is dirty you have to look closer, damage is much more obvious on clean jet skis.
Check oil - black is generally okay, milky / or contaminants could indicate damage.
Check that all compartments open and close correctly and have a look inside. Empty White Claw cans are the most commonly found item :)
Smell for any off smells, use all your senses.
Check coolant level (if the model has coolant).
Power on ignition (don't start the ski).
Check hours.
Check for any errors or maintenance messages. “Maintenance required” is often just an automated message based on hours.
Check for two keys.
If it is close loop cooled (Sea Doo), start the jet ski with owner's permission, do not run for more than 10 seconds.
Stuttering or stalling may indicate an issue (less so in winter or if it hasn't been run recently).
Place it into forward and reverse (if it has this feature).
The display should show F and R and the gate should drop and raise in the back (requires 2 people to check the gate drop).
Do not run for more than 10 seconds!
Check trailer lights.
Check condition of trailer tongue, wheels, axel, and jack stand.
Review the title.
HIN and VIN must match jet ski and trailer.
Title issue date should align with the seller's ownership story.
Minor issues with the above items are to be expected, more major / undisclosed ones may warrant a negotiation of the purchase price or walking away.
Risk is inherent with a used vehicle purchase, at this point you'll need to calculate and accept or decline the risk level.
Pay the seller, negotiate, or walk away.
Ensure the title documents are signed in the correct location.
Take a selfie with the jet ski.
